When a situation dictates a physical confrontation, being able to defend yourself is key. Ed Parker’s American Kenpo Karate system is an excellent style to train in order to familiarize yourself with a wide range of attacks and appropriate defense combinations to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. At our West Hartford academy, we teach Ed Parker’s American Kenpo Karate.
Karate is a Japanese martial art, also known as Karate Do (空手道). It focuses on strikes – punches and kicks – as well as blocks. In Kenpo Karate, students learn basic strikes and blocks which are combined into effective self defense combinations. By understanding body mechanics and through regular training, students gain a new understanding of how to counter a strike against them with a block, then follow with grabs and finally return a strike or multiple strikes to the assailant.

Structured curriculum for an ascent to more power and efficiency
When you take a karate class, you are learning functional movements that can save your life while giving you a workout. As you train in Kenpo Karate, you will be guided through a well-structured curriculum. At each belt and stripe level, you will learn new strikes, the block to defend against that strike, and effective combinations. In sparring, students wear protective gear, giving both sparring partners the ability to go a little harder (making it more real) while staying safe. Throughout your training, you will develop your muscles, learn to block, and your body will inevitably become more prepared to deal with blows that the opponent actually lands (hey – we can’t block them all!) The result is a well-rounded student who has more self-confidence, more awareness of surroundings, and exponentially better odds at being able to defend themselves if and when that time comes.
Can Kenpo Karate be combined with other martial arts?
At Plus One, our Kenpo Karate students also learn aspects of kung fu and muay thai kickboxing. We believe in learning foundational skills while allowing them to be combined with other arts to create a well-rounded system and practitioner. As a member of the academy, you are entitled to try any of the martial arts we offer: Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Aikido, Capoiera, Silat, MMA, and so on.
