Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
WE’RE ABOUT REAL BJJ – WE’RE NOT IN THIS TO PUSH BELTS.
We’re in this to bring multiple generations of brazilian jiu-jitsu combat and sport experience to YOU, and make sure you’re getting it.
That means a lot of practice. BJJ takes heart, persistence, confidence, stamina, and creative thinking. We will help you gain these skills as we teach this art of grappling.
Our professors are world-class. Success breeds success. We are a family and a team.
Welcome to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at Plus One Defense Systems of West Hartford.
Come. Learn. Train. Grow.
Repeat.
I’ve been coming to Plus One in West Hartford about a year and a half, and I’ve lost over 50 pounds doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. My whole family trains here. I love Jiu-Jitsu! I love this school!

I started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Plus One Defense Systems because my husband thought it was a good idea. I was amazed that they had women’s-only BJJ classes! Today, I enjoy going to all the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. The training is awesome, and I can’t stop asking my husband to do BJJ with me when we’re at home. I love the mental and physical challenge that the training provides. I have enhanced confidence, and it feels great to learn self defense in such a fun way. I also like the exercise component that the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes provide. It’s way more fun and effective than the treadmill at the gym LOL.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Carlos Gracie to Today
A major factor in BJJ style is due in part to lineage.
At Plus One Defense Systems, we respect this art which has been passed down from the founders and legends of the BJJ world.
CARLOS GRACIE
Carlos Gracie is one of the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As such, he was awarded with the 10th degree Red Belt. He was the first of the Gracie brothers to learn the arts of Judo and Jujutsu from Otavio Mitsuyo Maeda (aka “Count Koma”). Based on what he learned, Carlos and his brothers founded the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
FRANCISCO SA
Professor Sa is provided with credit for bringing the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the North East region of Brazil, where it is flourishing today.
MARCUS AURELIO
Marcus Aurelio is a 5th Degree black belt. He moved to the US in 2001. He is a Pride and UFC veteran and holds the record for fastest submission in the UFC. He currently runs the Marcus Aurelio BJJ Academy in North Miami Beach, Florida.

THAT BJJ CONFIDENCE
Let’s face it. BJJ participants walk and talk a little different, and it’s due to a special confidence and balance that is attained by being a part of a BJJ culture and team. BJJ confidence is difficult to explain. It might be better to just stop by and see it for yourself. We’re positive that you will feel it and become a part of it immediately!
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU FOR WOMEN
We have many female practitioners who love this martial art for the intense, total body workout. Grappling effectively requires strength but this particular art is also about submission tactics; these tactics can and will work against anyone. Therefore, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a perfect component to add to your arsenal to even the playing field!
We offer both Womens-Only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes AND Co-Ed BJJ Classes. In fact, we were the first academy in CT to offer a womens-only BJJ class.
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU FOR FITNESS
BJJ is typically close-quarter grappling. It’s “human tug-of-war” for minutes at a time. Once you get on the mat and start rolling, you will immediately feel and see the health benefits of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. BJJ is an amazing workout which safely tasks and builds your cardiovascular system , your stamina, your strength, your flexibility, and more. We recommend Brazilian jiu-jitsu for physical fitness to anyone who is interested in a martial arts program to promote a healthy body and mind.

And, for those interested in MMA, we also have MMA classes and teams. BJJ fits right into the mix:
BJJ … teaches a fighter how to successfully manage his guard, which is when a fighter finds himself pinned on his back. This fighting style is preferred by many MMA fighters looking to get an edge in the ground game.

Crushing roundhouse kicks and explosive haymaker punches may win a fight, but what happens when your opponent gets in your grill, up close and personal, or when the fight goes to the ground? Answer: you’d better be able to protect, strike, and evade, or even drive the match to a close with a submission hold or choke. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is all about that.
