Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Class
WE’RE ABOUT REAL BJJ – WE’RE NOT IN THIS TO PUSH BELTS.
A typical Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class teaches groundwork, submissions, and effective techniques for self defense and competition prep. We hold gi, no-gi and mixed classes for all ages and skill levels. We also have a women’s BJJ class – Plus One Defense Systems was the first academy in CT to offer a women’s-only BJJ class.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground work and submissions. Practitioners learn how to utilize Brazilian Jiujitsu principles from different positions on the ground with their partner. Students learn takedowns, basic and advanced positions, transitions between those positions, and submission techniques. The video shows practitioners wearing the uniform (gi); at Plus One Defense Systems, we also train without the uniform, which is known as “no-gi BJJ.”
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class + Self Defense
According to research, a vast majority of fights go to the ground. Knowing how to defend yourself when you are on the ground, or when you and your assailant are on the ground, is imperative to your safety. This art deals with close-quarter combat, evasion and submission. For men and women alike, practicing the techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could be the difference between evading a scuffle and a violent crime.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Women
We have many female practitioners who love this martial art for the intense, total body workout. Grappling effectively requires strength but this particular art is also about submission tactics; these tactics can and will work against anyone. Therefore, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a perfect component to add to your arsenal to even the playing field!
We offer both Womens-Only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes AND Co-Ed BJJ Classes. In fact, we were the first academy in CT to offer a womens-only BJJ class.
MMA Prep: BJJ is IMPERATIVE for the “Ground Game”
BJJ … teaches a fighter how to successfully manage his guard, which is when a fighter finds himself pinned on his back. This fighting style is preferred by many MMA fighters looking to get an edge in the ground game.

Crushing roundhouse kicks and explosive haymaker punches may win a fight, but what happens when your opponent gets in your grill, up close and personal, or when the fight goes to the ground? Answer: you’d better be able to protect, strike, and evade, or even drive the match to a close with a submission hold or choke. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is all about that.
